The UK is to have a referendum on the treaty and I am wondering about the other EU countries. I am interested in everybody’s perspective - there are some questions for Americans and others down the bottom, but feel free to answer any questions that you want to.
1) What country are you from?
UK
2) Are you having a referendum on the proposed EU constitution? If you don't do you think you should?
Yup I'll answer the second part anyway; I only think it is worth having a referendum if there is some effort on the part of the government to inform the general public about the content. The European constitution is huge, and a minority will read it. However, many more will vote, and so I think that it is important to get people as informed as possible. Not a one sided information campaign I should add; that would be pointless.
3) Have you read the constitution?
4) I have read parts (because I don't trust the BBC or any other news outlet to portray it in an unbiased fashion). I plan on reading it fully. Would you find it useful for me to make post summaries and what I think the implications are of the various articles?
I have read parts of it also; hopefully I will have read most or all by the time there is a referendum. Likewise, I don't trust the media to feed it to me
If you posted summaries, I would definitely read them; we are different politically and different inerpretations are always useful.
5) If there were a referendum tomorrow how would you vote (assume just a yes or no question – yes to accept, and no to reject)?
If there were one tomorrow, I would not vote; I simply an too uninformed at the moment.
6) Do you plan on voting in the European elections in the summer?
Possibly...again I need to do some more research before I would consider myself informed enough to vote
For those that are having a referendum:
7) Do you think that your government will set a simple, unbiased question just about the EU constitution?
I would hope so, but I am not too optimistic about it. Trusting politicians to be honest, and to genuinely care about getting an informed, representative response is not something that I feel able to do. Sad really.
