I get to answer both .
1. What is your major?
MS is System Science (think Computer Science) with a focus in Information systems and decisions support.
2. What job do you hope to get because of this preparation?
I don't think there is a set job that anyone can hope for because of his or her degree. The economy has fundamentally changed; the majority of people will not do the same job all the way through their careers. I hope though it will give me the qualities I will need to succeed in lots of different jobs. Having said all that I am sure that most of my jobs will be in the technical or management field.
3. Is higher education giving you what you feel you need to be successful?
See above kind of. But also yes. To succeed in the future people are going to need to be flexible, and continually learn new things from a different perspective.
4. Did you go to college right after high school or did you wait?
Had to wait 7 months between finishing my degree and starting the MS.
If you have already graduated...
5. What is your degree in?
BSc Computer Science
6. Did you find a job that is relevant to your degree?
Well I found another degree based on the principles of my existing one.
7. Is that job as fulfilling as you thought it would be?
I am getting more from the course than I thought I would. Or perhaps I should say I am getting different things from the course than I thought I would.
8. Did your schooling properly prepare you for said occupation?
OK, maybe this one isn't totally applicable. The UK system is different from the US system so I did have some readjusting to do.
9. Hindsight can be both wonderful and terrible sometimes. Do you wish you had chosen a different topic of study?
No. At secondary school (high school) I wish I had been better at studying foreign languages. I don't know what I would have dropped to make room. To anyone that reads this being able to speak another language will give you an advantage over your peers particularly if you know another culture.
10. If you like your occupation, YAY FOR YOU!
Being a student ain't bad, but I am getting a little tired of it now.
11. If not, will you go back to school for something else?
I may have to come back to school in the future - that's the way of the world now; continual re-training.
12. Did you go to school right after high school or did you wait a while until you figured out what you wanted to do?
I took a year out before going to university for the first time, but that was really just to earn some cash and get some experience. I already knew what I was going to do.
13. If you waited ... do you feel this is directly related to your feeling fulfilled in your occupation?
I think it can give you a bit of focus that otherwise you might be lacking.
14. Any advice for the ones currently still in school?
Enjoy yourself (and don't take your time there for granted).
If you have the opportunity study abroad. We live in a global economy. If you know how other countries work and live (the kind of thing that you only get from living there) then that is a huge advantage to your employer and hence to you when getting employed.
If you have the opportunity learn a foreign language. It's tied in with the above. Though you don't necessarily have to learn a foreign language to study abroad.
Don't box yourself into one way of thinking. Excel at your chosen topic but accept that other disciplines have different views on the same topic. They are not necessarily wrong or right but appropriate for that discipline. If you know how they think about things it can be easier to transfer to that way of thinking later on.
oh, and... Good luck to you all, in life and in school.
Thank you - you too
