For me he would have been better than Pele but he wasted it with drugs, and by being a cheat - not just against England, but he wasn't the most sporting of people. The 1986 quarter final against England summed him completely - he scores the best goal ever, and then the Hand of God all in the same game.
I don't know if he would have been better then Pele, I always think it is impossible to judge across eras like that...but he could have achieved so much more in football and afterwards. I agree with you about the cheat statement, though I find it hard to look past the Hand of God, he was in a team that tended to be dirty with him at the fore.
It is sad to see anyone in the state that he is in.
