Do you ever say or heard any of your countrymen say anything remotely close to your country being the Strongest Country in the World?
No. Australians as a whole do not have delusions of grandeur unless it comes to sport!
I was wondering that last night when someone mentioned about how they didn't care what the President did (i.e. Clinto & Lewinsky), as long as he does his job. He's the leader of the most powerful nation on earth for God's sake!
Neither do they worry about the private lives of their leaders too much. So long as they are doing their job. So the remark you overheard wouldn't be that unusual in Australia.
Plus Australians have such low opinion of politicians anyway that nothing they did would surprise them.
