The sack of Constantinople ranks alongside the burning of the Library of Alexandria and the destruction of Baghdad by Hulagu Khan as one of the most destructive events in world history from a cultural perspective. Priceless ancient art treasures, early Christian art, ancient books, famous statues and entire buildings were ruthlessly destroyed, chopped up, used for ballast in Venetian ships, burned, etc.
