The term was invented for Japanese youths who forsake everyday society and retreat into a world consisting of Anime (the likes of which most American fans will never even come close to seeing) in an almost cultish manner.

That's not entirely accurate. You can be an "otaku" in just about anything. Mecha-otaku. Hentai-otaku. etc.

It implies an unhealthy obssesion/fanaticism, and is not limited only to anime.
