Make a big step forward. your feet are pretty much in-line vertically with a distace of about 2-2.5 feet between them. Lower yourself, bending your knees, until the knee of your back leg touches the floor. Straighten your knees. Repeat until it hurts.
I do what I call my super-lunges, with weights (7lbs in each hand), I take a very big step forward, so that my back leg is pretty much straight on the floor (like a certain yoga move), and then get up. Works the glutes quite well. That's one exercise that I usually feel the morning after.
rather than striding so far forward, perhaps you could try to push up through the heel of your lead foot. Imagine that you are drilling the heel into the floor and then push up through it. You should feel that.
