I agree that crash diets are dangerous and unhealthy. You shouldn't lose more than 2-3 pounds per week. I've lost nearly 25 pounds since Christmas and the way I did it is...

The best thing is going to be to improve your diet. Eat more veggies (fresh is better) and start your meals with them--you'll be less hungry when it comes to eating less healthy foods. Watch out for fruit. It's healthy, but it is high in sugar (fructose), so if you eat too much, you're not helping yourself. Lower protein intake. 5-6 ounces of meat PER DAY is probably the top of your range. Also, not all "veggies" are good. Corn is high in carbohydrates. Green beans, broccoli, carrots are all GOOD veggies.
