For instance, the only thing that annnoyed me about any Jews when it came to "The Passion" was the number of Rabbis and whatnot who were saying how you couldn't put certain things into a movie about the Gospels.
And as for the sect the Gibsons supposedly follow, to be fair, they aren't radicals or anything. They just didn't change along with the Church proper. Hell, if you want to get real picky, the Greek Orthodox Church is the real church, as it wasn't co-opted by the Romans and Western Europeans as much.
Catholicism is somewhat different from a lot of branches of Christianity in that it holds itself to be the official word of Jesus/God on Earth, granted authority through Peter, though the Catholic Church itself didn't arise for quite some time after his death.
