How long ago?
Long enough ago that I wouldn't know without researching it. Long enough ago that it would depend on which part of my family you mean.
My 2 parents lived their whole lives here.
Their 4 parents lived their whole lives here.
Their 8 parents? I'm not so sure. Probably most of them lived their whole lives here.
Their 16 parents? I know that I have a full-blooded Cherokee and a full-blooded Blackfoot Indians in this group.
Their 32 parents?
Did my family maintain some sort of bond to the many European (and other) countries that these ancestors came from? I doubt it. We're Americans. For all I know, my family name "Johnson" was bestowed upon us by a half-literate immigration official who couldn't (or couldn't be bothered to) pronounce or try to spell Jovtvev.
