It depends on what you consider religion to be for. Basically, though, all religions think that they are right, and thus, everyone should agree with them. Parents believe they're doing their duty to raise their child as such.

Although, let's look at what happened to me. My parents raised me Christian, with Christian values. We would go to church every Sunday. I'm now an athiest, but many of the rules and guidelines of my religion still serve me well in life. Just because you believe in something else doesn't mean that you have to forsake everything about your former religion.

Interesting thought though.
