Religious belief is typically handed down to us by our parents (yes, I know, there are exceptions too). This is the typical scenario though. For example, I'm Catholic, and that's completely because of my parents. Most religious parents take their children to worship all through their childhood, and it basically indoctrinates the child.
I mean, now, if I wanted to suddenly I wanted to become Hindu, I couldn't because my Catholic beliefs have become instilled too deeply, and I can't really change now. Maybe that's not the case for everyone, but it is for me.
And so, we're not really given a choice as to what we should believe. If our parents are Catholic, we're going to be Catholic, if our parents are Lutherans, we're going to be Lutheran, and so on. And even belief in no religion comes from parents, if our parents are athiests, then more likely than not, so are we.
So, we don't really have a choice. How is that fair though? Shouldn't we wait till we're in the late teen years, or at least mature, so that we can make an informed decision?
I mean, I think it would make so much more sense if I had been brought up being told about all the options, and always being able to ask for more information about various religions, and then, when mature and sensible enough, I could make a decision that would affect the rest of my life.
What are your thoughts?
I fall so hard inside the idea of you
