The idea is more that the main character and his friends start inventing a conspiracy for fun. It makes a frightening amount of sense, too, and it's well-researched. Eco throws in a wealth of historical details, most of which seem pretty accurate. He references all sorts of historical writers and events and draws them all together into a cohesive whole. It's really spectacular.
I just found myself needing to skim a few of the chapters because of their verbosity.
I think that, on balance, I would recommend the book. Let me put it this way: if you liked Dan Brown at all, Eco will put him to shame in grand style.
