I would disagree about attacking any meaning - I think this is a deliberate ploy. One of the ways of viewing the plan is as a joke about the nature of reality. It therefore makes sense to give the reader two choices in viewing the events - the "joke" of the plan or the harsh reality. To allow other interpretations would break down the barriers between the two.
There is, of course, a third possibility. Most of what they wrote was just absurd, but in the course of their writings they DID hit upon an actual connection that someone found dangerous. To put it in Eco's terms, not all information is of equal value, and one must sift through the rubbish to find rare gems of insight. This is the sense I get, for example, when I read Nietzsche.
This is a proposition I could have supported. However, Eco gives you the option of believing the Plan, in which everything is connected and everything means something, or his "reality", that nothing means anything when you get down to it. It's too sharp a contrast for my tastes. However, as I said before, I can understand that other people may not have this problem with his works.

Oh, I don't have time for this. I have to go and buy a single piece of fruit with a coupon and then return it, making people wait behind me while I complain. - Prof. Farnsworth
