I am not holding up cuba as the ideal society. I am just wondering at the wisdom of blocking the country off.

The poverty is horrible there from what I've seen/heard from the Cuban students I taught. Amazing how tight-knit the people are as a whole, though. I would hope that there would never be a FARC-type insurgency to emerge after Castro finally dies. Decades-long civil war is a horrible thing, as I saw on the faces of some of my Colombian students.
