While stretching this reference a little thin, as a minority you should have some understanding of how hard it is to maintain yourself and identity amid the American melting pot. Which is in and of itself, a large difference betweeen our two nations. America is the "Cultural melting pot" but Canada is a "Cultural mosiaic." It's hard to explain... it's one of those things you just know.
I hear this all the time from Canadians.
And it's total BS.
I've lived half my life in the US and half my life in Canada. You know what? Government 'comments' on 'melting pots' and 'mosaics' aside both countries treat their immigrants exactly the same.
My immigrant friends who are second generation are CANADIAN. They aren't Portugese or Chinese or Scottish or British or Philipino anymore. Indeed they never were.
"Melting" into a society you grow up in is a natural social occurance and has nothing to do with governmental anything. Canada is just as much a 'melting pot' as the US is.
It just hates to admit it.
