the poverty doesn't help them "evolve" at all, that's true. but we didn't create the society that made everyone but the elites there poor. plus, i think it goes far beyond the poor, humiliated men taking it out on their women. that almost makes it seem reasonable what they're doing, but there is simply NO excuse for it. i often wonder how the muslim nations, who were once so advanced in the past have slipped into barbarity. perhaps its because they're still frozen in the past.

I am not sure what you mean by the first part.
but as for the second part. yes, I think stagnation has a lot to do with it. when some scholar in the past (I should remember his name but I don't) declared that the "door to itjihad is closed" (ie, there shall be no more reinterpretation of the qur'an), he did a very bad thing. One of the reasons why the christian countries have been able to change into what it is today, is for a large part due to reinterpretation of the traditional creeds.
of course there is no excuse for what they are doing to the women, but that does not mean there is not an explanation.
