And like Larisa said, do Muslim women (or others) necessarily want to be under Sharia law?

I suspect that Muslims would say that of course they do. Muslim women who don't want to submit to Islam aren't really Muslims, are they?

Also...what is the difference between sunni and shia?

Lots of stuff. I believe the split occurred because there were differences over who should lead the Muslims after Mohammad.

Shias believe that the leader of Islam should be a descendent of Mohammad through his cousin Ali and Fatima.

Sunnis don't.
