And someone out of law school doesn't make $500 per hour. Lawyers who charge that are experienced professionals with 10+ years of extensive work in their respective fields.
In addition, chances are they aren't working on speeding tickets or minor lawsuits for individuals. These are the lawyers who represent large corporations. Corporations are willing to pay these fees to ensure that (1) the lawyer is on call 24-7, (2) the work will be of the highest possible quality and (3) the project will be done on time, no matter what.
As a result, large law firms tend to treat their attorneys like shit to ensure that the client gets what it expects. This particular story is just another instance of how partners at the firms get warped thinking as a result of their practices.
In short, I don't have a problem with them getting paid $500 per hour; I have a problem with the CULTURE that ensues when they justify it.

Oh, I don't have time for this. I have to go and buy a single piece of fruit with a coupon and then return it, making people wait behind me while I complain. - Prof. Farnsworth
