ok...well if you believe race to be an integral part of the story, then it should have been sufficient to leave in the bits about these women being daughters and granddaughters of slaves, as it implies their race.
however, by starting the article with 'two black women,' followed by something that many people will find either silly or annoying (cos these seem the most likely reactions to me), it links the two together in the minds of the reader. i simply feel that it wasn't necessary, whether it was intentional or not.
there...i believe i could be done being disagreeable for the moment.
