I'm playing devils advocate. The crucial question here is one of TIME. If world war 2 happened 125 years ago would it be a different story? If slavery happened 50-60 years ago, would it be a different story. It's time that is the crucial issue here.
The primary issue is that slavery for better or worse was legal at the time, there are a lot of other laws that have changed - is the British Government going to have to pay Australians for deporting them? - I'm fairly sure they wouldn't be able to do that to criminals these days
