Uh, there is your problem! You have been thinking this entire time -- and perhaps applying logic, too -- and that is simply not the way to go. To understand difficult problems such as these, you must suspend thinking, and perhaps even expell it, too.
I am also linking you to an interesting Foreign Affairs article, which you may or may not read. Also, I believe I mentioned to you that they had an article concerning Iran's crumbling revolution. I was false; the article concerns the Islamic Revolution.
