The state is not fundamentalist, since they've made laws about no religion in schools and stuff like that. However, look at the Bible-belt. Perhaps your proximity to it may blind you, but the attitude of the Southern states is quite extreme; at least, compared to Britain it is.
I was going to agree with you, then I was going to disagree with you, and no I am stuck where I belong: in the middle. You see, your proximity to the South is no further from mine, for I can offer little assessment of its culture, and neither do you. However, I might be tempted to argue that the Southern States and not the culture, is closer to being fundamentalist. For this I would offer its views on consensual anal sex (essentially, in my opinion, discrimination against homosexuals). I really cannot tell you anything about the culture of the present-day South, nor the Bible belt. I would offer up, however, that the Culture of the South is not the culture of America, which is what Chomsky states. The parts equal the whole -- yes -- but one might make the case that the culture of California itself negates the fundamentalist culture of the South.
