I imported my version from amazon.canada. Does this mean I read the original version the publishers scoffed or the new, revised version?
Erikson wrote GotM over seven years. I imagine he had his US literary agent hawk a draft around the US publishers, who declined the opportunity.
He then moved to the UK, where, under the guidance of his UK agent and a couple of decent editors, they tore it apart, and rewrote most of it, tightening it up considerably. That is what he roughly said on the Malazan website, and in interviews I have seen.
When he had got a UK publisher his US agent went back to the US publishers who said "Steven Erikson? GotM? Nah - seen that, declined it".
We all have only ever seen the revised version.
So you haven't read both versions? I wonder how much of a difference there truly is.
We will never know.
