Too bad the people don't elect the president. The states do.
I am well aware of that. That is why the USA has absolutely no credibility when it comes to talking about democracies.
The people of each state vote for who they want their state to vote for, and then the state (through the electoral college) casts a vote for whoever the majority of the people voted for.
I know. Though the electorals have the right to change their mind.
This is not a "technicality." It is a deliberate institution within the American government system to balance power between the states and the federal government.
Bah! You have got Congress for that. Why do it for the president as well?
America is not a Democracy. It is a Democratic Republic. No one ever said that majority rules.
Neither did I. It was one of the reasons why it is just as problematic accepting Bush as an undemocratically elected leader of any other country.
To the rest of this post:
It's misleading and prejudiced. It demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of American culture, society, or government. People should learn about things, or better yet visit places, before they spout off about them.
Learn about things? I have learnt about the USA for ten years, detailed in its litterature and its government and society. Europeans learn a lot about the USA in school, and it is all over our media.
Besides: is that not exactly what the USA does with respect to just about every other country?
