Ok, so I've always had sleeping problems, whether it was that I couldn't sleep in a strange place or had to go to the bathroom or was nervous and worried or thought that I'd never be able to fall asleep...
I totally understand this problem, and though I've worked on it for a long time, I still have troubles sometimes going to sleep. I have learned methods to calm myself down though until I finally find sleep. obviously there are going to be n ights for everyone where you just _can't_ go to sleep- it just wont happen; but here are some methods that won't hurt to try:
1) Try not to drink anything within the hour before you go to sleep. if you do, make sure you get up everytime you feel that dreadful need to go to the bathroom--you'll really have trouble getting comfy if you have a full bladder.
2) Any thoughts of exciting things (a test, starting school, a job you may get) think about it before you go to bed. That way, it'll be exhausted by the time you get to bed.
3) Keep a good book by your bed and don't be afraid to keep reading till you can barely keep your eyes open. If you can't sleep at all, it's pretty damn hard to make yourself just lie there. You might as well be reading till you are sleepy enough to really go to bed.
4) I have certain things I think about when I'm laying there trying to go to sleep. Things that make me happy (the wot story and characters for instance) and I just kinda think about those although my mind never really stays with them...
5) This is a suggestion from my bf: Think about nothing- literally. See black in your head, and your mind will constantly try to force images or colors or thoughts in, and every time you sense anything trying to come in, force it out! It doesn't work for me, but he says it works for him.
