my opinion of marriage? well, in my opinion marriage has two definitions..... there's the legal marriage, your "piece of paper" and there's the marriage of your souls....
the legal marriage is more than just a piece of paper or a ceremony you're forced to go through... it's a public affirmation of the bond two people have, the promises you have made and will make to eachother. It's announcing to friends and family your promise to take care of each other and to stand by the other no matter the cost.
of course there are also the legal aspects of it, you can't get healthcare and benefits for you significant other without a legal and binding marriage.... (this being why a large number of the gay/lesbian population are lobbying for same sex marriage to be legal.) this is, in effect, one way of telling your partner, "i'll take care of you".
and marriage of the soul, well that is harder to achieve than a legal marriage. as for me, i believe i have found just that. i already feel as tho i'm married, i have for a long time now. I don't need a ceremony, and i don't "need" a "piece of paper" to feel and know that i'm married to my boo in heart and soul. i feel it, every day of my life now, i feel this bond between us, and it grows stronger every day. When someone is your other half, your perfect match, you'll feel it, you'll know it, and then you'll realize what "marriage of the soul" is.
but to answer your question, yes we need marriage in the legal sense, you need it to be able to care for you partner.
but for a love to last, no you don't need a marriage, if the love was meant to be, it will last, and nothing shall put asunder tru love.
