There are all sorts of couples. There are couples who think that marriage is first and foremost an economic arrangement, a box they check off on their tax returns and a way of transferring assets back and forth without having to pay taxes on the gain that would otherwise be realized.

Other people think it's an economic arrangement of another kind, where a man gets free sex and makes all the important decisions and his wife stays at home, bakes cookies, raises kids and cleans while he's out earning money and getting a blow job from his 3D secretary.

There are those who think that they can't have sex unless they have a little slip of paper, because God will hate them if they screw before He lets them. He apparently is Himself a sado-masochist, giving people a healthy sexual appetite and then striking them dead or blind for jacking off, ass-fucking, or thinking about other women while they're having sex with their wives. For them, marriage lets them get off without going to Hell.

Other couples think that it's just something that you have to do in order to fit in, but they go off and screw whomever they want to on the side.

Other couples think it's the only way to have kids and yet not have the kids grow up totally messed up in the head over having parents who didn't get married.

Married couples the world over cheat on each other, fight and beat each other, resent and hate each other, take pills or alcohol to deaden the hell that their personal lives have become, kill themselves, kill their spouses, kill their children and generally screw their lives up.

I think the reason this happens is people come to marriage for all the wrong reasons.

My own personal opinion is that the ONLY thing that marriage is, and should be, is a public affirmation of deep emotions between two people who love each other very much. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter what sex they are. In fact, I wouldn't really have a problem with marriage being a public affirmation of deep emotions among three people, though at a certain point the number of people gets confusing.

Regardless, the simple fact is that marriage is what people make of it. Your own marriage will only mean what you make it mean. Does that make sense?
