It's not the paper, it's what it symbolises. Like the rings. The rings could be made of wood, and they'd still be important. People can't hold on to abstrats - they eed the tangibles, to believe in anything. that's why we have the flowers, the choclate.

No. You need a tangible symbol of the marraige. Many people elope and run off to Vegas - it's the elopement and the thought we are married that is important. With the paper, they have proof that they are kith and kin, and can now do legal stuff (inheritance, insurance etxc) together.
You're focusing waaay too much on paper.
