I won't discredit what you say, because largely what you point out is true. (To say that we're the only country that is guilty of this though would be a fallacy, as nearly all the civilized countries of the world consume at an alarming rate. Even countries not as industrial as we, like India and China.)
That said, if you are going to call our nation down for its misdeeds, it would be neglectful if you didn't also be acknowledge that monetarily the U.S. is the leading source of funding for all environmental and ecological programs nearly worldwide. As much as we are, perhaps, truly gluttonous in our consumption - we at least attempt to improve, invent, or increase measures and safeguards to enable us to continue to consume in such a way while doing less harm to the environment.
The polar caps melting, while widely 'accepted' as it may be in the world of academia, most likely will not present an 'imminent threat' to the world for numerous generations to come. So if it isn't 'imminent' I guess we shouldn't worry about it. (Sorry, *cough*, I must have gotten off on a tangent. So much talk about imminence lately.)
There is nothing wrong with being more environmentally aware. There is nothing wrong with SUV's. There is nothing wrong with wanting both SUV's and Passenger Cars to continue to improve their emissions. There is nothing wrong with any of it. It's just the extreme activist laden environment of the current times, that is a bit much for us all to stomach. People that want to scream, protest, slash tires, and refuse to acknowledge common sense and reason to enter into their gated minds. That's what Americans are resistant too. Not the idea of environmental reform.
