That's what I've been trying to say. It is venturing out into the world, without appreciating the beauty and difference of it, that irritates people. That, along with assuming everyone out there is somehow backwards and of a lower class.
From a world point of view Americans driving SUVs is a minor issue - most people outside America neither know nor care what somebody in Utah drives to work
It is as you've said the impresion made by American tourists, but I think it's made worse because they tend to be loud with their attitudes - who notices the Americans who come to England, admire the beauty of the country and don't complain? After all they're drawing people's attention so people only notice the loud arrogant Americans
Plus I saw a documentry about tourists in England that included a group of Americans, all they did was complain that there weren't the same places to eat as in America - that did really get my goat!
