Let's think about this for a second. America has Mexico to the south and Canada to the north. That is IT. Also, America is big, so odds are, an American doesn't even live near either. Europe on the other hand has various languages all over the place in a might tighter area. So why should an American study langauges they will not use unless they are going to be traveling alot? In highschool, you are required to take a year of foriegn langauge. . .and most take a few years of it. Personally, I know a little Spanish. . .enough to get around a Spanish-speaking area, but not really enough to be able to follow/have a conversation.
