As a euro living in the US I have to admit that a lot of things bug me too.
Still I could move back to Europe so I can't preach too loudly.
I have to say I think it's primarily a function of the media. The environment, climate change, even foreign affairs aren't really on the agenda here. I can't speak for continental Europeans but if you live in the UK these are major issues. There are only 5 major TV channels and they do a lot of news. There are a lot of newspapers who also cover this stuff.
If you live in the US you can find out about this stuff if you want but its hardly front page news.
Finally my local WB11 station ad for tonight's news was
