You're way older and wiser than me, so I'm really being very impudent to say that as if you didn't know, but perhaps I can explain what I think he meant. I think his point is that a large number of Americans are enjoying their freedom and hanging the responsibility. He's not getting at the people who need SUVs for extra comfort on frequent long-distance drives, or who need to carry lots of stuff on a regular basis. He's getting at the people who think they're somehow superior because they drive a bigger car. Not everyone who drives an SUV is like that, but some are, and those are a significant enough number for people to have noticed this tendency. I don't agree that he said everything in the right way - in fact he was quite rude and generalised more than he has a right - but the point stands. People who drive fuel-guzzlers for no good reason are poisoning the environment and using up more of the earth's resources than they have a right. In our Western society, very few people believe, in their very heart of hearts, that our sources of fuel will ever run out. But that doesn't change the fact that they will, and I truly believe that the way we live now will be only a very short blip on the map of human history, because if we don't find a good alternative soon, we'll be living in caves again, and no joke or exaggeration there. Of course, if we work out how to make energy in a better way, then it might end up being OK. But even nuclear power won't last forever.
OK, I'll shut up now. Yours, .
